Indonesia’s statistics bureau printed 5.47% year-on-year GDP growth for the third quarter — above the ~5.2% consensus — and the rupiah firmed toward about Rp18,065–18,090 per dollar as a softer post-midterm dollar and sliding oil gave EM Asia another bid.
MoneyTurkey Economics Desk | 5 November 2026, 07:25 London. USD/IDR about 18,065–18,090 on the Thursday morning tape
Key points
- BPS: Q3 GDP +5.47% y/y vs ~5.2% consensus; up from 5.29% in Q2 (still below Q1’s 5.61%)
- Quarter-on-quarter +1.59% (~1.6%), beating ~1.3% forecasts but slowing from Q2’s ~3.7% surge
- USD/IDR firmed to roughly Rp18,065–18,090 after Wednesday’s close near Rp18,155 — GDP beat plus a softer dollar after the Democratic midterm sweep
For EM books this is a local print with a FX tell: Southeast Asia’s largest economy cleared the fiscal-worry bar for one quarter, and the rupiah moved with the dollar/oil tape rather than waiting for a Jakarta policy pivot.
What BPS said
Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) said Thursday that constant-price GDP rose 5.47% year-on-year in July–September. Deputi Moh. Edy Mahmud told reporters household consumption stayed the main support, with government spending and manufacturing also contributing — including palm-oil processing into fuel under the expanded biodiesel mandate.
Local detail that wires often compress: household consumption grew about 5.04% y/y; government consumption about 8.95%; fixed investment (PMTB) about 6.06%. Manufacturing, trade, construction and info-comms led on the production side. Constant-price GDP was about Rp3,633 trillion (~$201bn at ~Rp18,080/$); current-price about Rp6,741 trillion (~$373bn).
Markets tape
- USD/IDR: Thursday morning quotes clustered near Rp18,065–18,090, stronger than Wednesday’s close around Rp18,155 (Refinitiv/CNBC Indonesia; spot ~18,065 as of ~07:28 UTC)
- Drivers alongside the GDP beat: dollar softness after Democrats swept both US houses, plus oil’s slide from last week’s highs — the same cocktail that bid Indian bonds and the rupee overnight
- Investor backdrop remains wary: fiscal-plan scrutiny and equity-market downgrade risk have weighed on sentiment even as the growth print cleared consensus
Policy frame
The 2026 state budget targets 5.4% full-year growth; Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara has said the economy could reach about 5.5%. That sits inside Bank Indonesia’s 4.9%–5.7% outlook. BI still leans on rates and market operations to manage capital flows — a firmer growth print eases immediate fiscal-health concerns but does not by itself rewrite the next policy meeting.
Why it matters
Missed-markets angle: majors lead with the Reuters number; the tradeable tell is IDR + oil + post-midterm dollar. A 5.47% print that beats ~5.2% while sequential growth cools from 3.7% to ~1.6% is “solid, not runaway” — enough to support the rupiah’s bid when the dollar is already on the back foot, not a signal that Jakarta can ignore fiscal optics.
What to watch
- Whether USD/IDR can hold below ~18,100 if oil stays softer
- Next Indonesian inflation and trade-balance prints
- Bank Indonesia’s next statement for any growth/FX balance shift
