Key points
- Liquid Network said its bitcoin IOUs are fully backed again after September’s exploit.
- Blockstream provided the funds to restore the reserves.
Liquid Network has restored full bitcoin backing to its sidechain two months after an exploit drained $320 million in reserves. The network’s bitcoin IOUs are once again matched one-for-one by actual bitcoin held in custody. Blockstream, the company behind Liquid, supplied the funds that closed the gap. The move removes the largest open question hanging over the sidechain since the September incident.
What happened
In September an exploit left Liquid Network short roughly $320 million in bitcoin backing. The shortfall meant that issued Liquid bitcoin, known as L-BTC, were no longer fully collateralised. CoinDesk reported that the network’s bitcoin IOUs are now fully backed again. The Block wrote that Liquid Network said its bitcoin reserves are back to full backing after the exploit, with Blockstream providing the funds. The restoration brings the peg back to its original one-to-one ratio.
How the gap was closed
Blockstream transferred bitcoin into the network’s reserve addresses to replace the missing collateral. The company did not disclose the exact timing of the transfers, but both CoinDesk and The Block confirmed the reserves now match outstanding L-BTC. The action ends a period in which users and exchanges had to weigh the risk that not every L-BTC was backed by an equal amount of bitcoin on the base layer.
Why it matters
Liquid is used by traders and issuers who need faster bitcoin settlement and confidentiality features that the main chain does not provide. When the backing fell short, confidence in those features was secondary to the question of whether the peg would hold. Restoring full reserves removes that immediate concern and returns the network to its stated design. Market participants who paused L-BTC activity after the exploit now have on-chain proof that the peg is whole again.
Next steps
The network has not released a post-mortem on how the exploit occurred or whether additional security changes are planned. Blockstream has not said whether it will seek reimbursement or treat the transferred bitcoin as a permanent capital contribution. Exchanges that suspended L-BTC deposits and withdrawals have not yet indicated when they will resume full support.
What to watch
- Blockstream statements on reimbursement or security upgrades
- Exchange policies on L-BTC deposits and withdrawals
- On-chain reserve address data for continued 1:1 backing
- Any public post-mortem or audit findings
