What happened
Eurex said October derivatives volume reached 200 million contracts, a 27% year-on-year rise, driven by a 42% jump in interest-rate activity. OTC clearing volumes more than doubled and repo trading kept expanding, according to Futures & Options World citing the exchange’s monthly statistics.
Nasdaq’s reported derivatives volumes fell 0.8% year on year to 425.5 million contracts from 428.8 million a year earlier. A 22% decline in European options and futures activity accompanied broadly stable US equity options trading.
Marex reported a 53% year-on-year increase in third-quarter revenue to a record $743.2 million, from $484.6 million a year earlier, with growth across market making, clearing and prime services.
What the futures and options market is pricing
The 42% jump in Eurex interest-rate volumes points to heavier positioning in euro-denominated rate futures and options, with short-term contracts carrying much of the increase. Doubled OTC clearing indicates dealers are moving more rate-swap exposure onto the exchange’s clearing platform.
Repo expansion on Eurex suggests continued demand for secured funding lines as balance-sheet capacity stays tight. Nasdaq’s 22% drop in European equity derivatives volumes shows reduced activity in index futures and options on that venue, while stable US equity options volumes indicate single-stock volatility trading has held steady.
Why it matters
Higher Eurex rates volumes and doubled OTC clearing point to increased hedging demand ahead of policy decisions and quarter-end balance-sheet reporting. Repo growth shows participants continue to seek exchange-cleared secured funding while balance-sheet costs remain elevated.
Marex’s 53% revenue increase to $743.2 million reflects the same environment: market-making desks capturing wider spreads in rates and equity options, and clearing and prime-services units onboarding institutional clients that need exchange access. Nasdaq’s mixed print shows liquidity rotating from European equity derivatives into rates products.
