Sterling overnight index swaps and short-sterling futures kept pricing a faster Bank of England tightening path after the Monetary Policy Committee delivered an 8–1 hike to 4.00% and Catherine Mann dissented for a half-point rise.

Key points
- Bank Rate is now 4.00% after an 8–1 vote; Mann alone wanted +50bp to 4.25%.
- OIS/futures still embed roughly 70–75bp of further tightening by late 2027 — about three more 25bp moves — after the hawkish split.
- September CPI was 3.5%; the Bank projects inflation rising toward about 5% by mid-2027 before falling back.
Traders left the day’s Bank of England decision still pricing a multi-hike path into 2027 after the MPC’s hawkish vote split. The Committee raised Bank Rate by 25 basis points to 4.00% — the first increase since August 2023 — with only Catherine Mann dissenting in favour of a 50bp jump to 4.25%. That outcome, plus open-ended guidance tied to energy prices and the Middle East conflict, kept rate futures and overnight index swaps leaning toward further tightening rather than a one-and-done insurance hike.
What happened
The decision was published at 12:00 London after a meeting that ended on 4 November. Eight members backed the quarter-point rise; Mann’s lone call for 50bp marked a hawkish surprise relative to desks that had expected one or more hold votes. Governor Andrew Bailey said today’s increase should not be seen as the first in an inevitable long sequence, but that it was also unlikely to be the last unless the Iran-linked energy shock eases. Several other policymakers, including Clare Lombardelli, Megan Greene and Huw Pill, flagged further tightening if energy and inflation pressures persist.
UK CPI inflation was 3.5% in September, an 11-month high and well above the 2% target. The Bank’s projections see inflation climbing toward around 5% by the middle of next year as energy costs feed through, then falling back. The Committee again stressed that monetary policy is “not on a pre-set path.”
What the futures and options market is pricing
Going into the meeting, money markets had almost fully priced today’s 25bp move and nearly three further rises next year. After the vote, OIS pricing still pointed to roughly 70bp of cumulative hikes from the new 4.00% level by late 2027 — about 2.8 × 25bp steps — with a February 2027 follow-up among the more heavily priced meetings. Some FX and rates desks, including Ebury via FXStreet, argue that ~75bp of further tightening by late 2027 looks too aggressive given soft second-round evidence and elevated unemployment, but the hawkish 8–1 split and Mann’s 50bp dissent left little immediate room for a dovish repricing.
Higher Bank Rate passes quickly into tracker and variable-rate mortgages, credit cards and corporate loans. Rate-sensitive UK sectors that rely on leverage or long-duration cash flows feel that shift in discount rates most directly. Gilts and sterling had largely priced the 25bp step; the vote split and the inflation peak near 5% matter more for the path priced in short-sterling futures and SONIA/OIS curves.
Why it matters
For derivatives desks, today’s tape is less about whether Bank Rate moved to 4% and more about how many additional hikes survive the next inflation prints and any news on the Middle East energy shock. A hawkish vote with a lone dissent for a bigger move keeps further tightening on the table even as Bailey pushed back against an automatic hiking sequence.
MoneyTurkey’s read: an 8–1 decision with Mann at +50bp, plus ~70–75bp still priced into late 2027, keeps UK rate futures sensitive to every CPI and energy update into early 2027. The decision story remains the homepage lede; this piece tracks the path priced after the vote.
What to watch
- February 2027 MPC odds and cumulative OIS/futures pricing into late 2027
- UK CPI, wage and survey prints for second-round inflation evidence
- Energy prices and any de-escalation that would cut the case for further hikes
- Gilt curve and sterling reaction as markets reassess the path
