Eurex Clearing First Hybrid CCP for Digital Assets

Eurex Clearing trading floor with digital asset screens

Eurex Clearing will clear native digital instruments under the same rulebook and risk model as traditional securities, giving clients one relationship and one liquidity pool.

MoneyTurkey Derivatives Desk | 2 November 2026

Key points

  • Eurex Clearing will become the first hybrid CCP, integrating traditional and digitally native securities under one clearing framework, one rulebook, and one unified risk model.
  • Native digital instruments, including ESM issuances, will trade on Eurex Repo GC Pooling, clear at Eurex Clearing, and qualify as ECB GC Pooling basket collateral.

Eurex Clearing will become the world’s first hybrid central counterparty, bringing native digital instruments into its existing clearing system alongside traditional securities. The change lets market participants trade, clear, and finance digital assets through the same relationship and risk model they already use. Deutsche Börse Group is linking Eurex Clearing with Clearstream’s digital infrastructure to move securities and cash between traditional and blockchain environments.

What happened

Eurex Clearing will novate and clear all transactions in the new hybrid model, guaranteeing settlement finality, multilateral netting, and default management under a single set of rules. Native digital instruments will be accepted as eligible margin collateral and will sit in the ECB GC Pooling basket, giving them the same liquidity access as traditional instruments.

The European Stability Mechanism has already issued the first live digital native bond. Clearstream, also part of Deutsche Börse Group, will custody the instruments and allow clients to move them and associated cash across traditional and blockchain ecosystems, including wholesale central bank money via the Eurosystem Pontes solution.

Eurex has separately decided to scale back some measures aimed at boosting volume in its short-term interest rate markets because regulatory uncertainty continues to limit progress toward a European hub for those contracts.

What the futures and options market is pricing

The hybrid CCP structure concentrates liquidity for both traditional and digital instruments in one pool rather than splitting it across separate venues. Market participants will not need to build bespoke connectivity or manage disparate risk models to trade the new digital instruments.

By accepting digital assets as collateral in the ECB GC Pooling basket, Eurex Clearing removes a potential pricing disadvantage versus traditional securities. This reduces the basis that would otherwise appear between cleared digital and traditional repo contracts.

The integration does not alter existing futures or options contracts on Eurex; it adds a new class of cleared instruments that can be financed and margined within the same framework.

Why it matters

Institutional clients can scale digital-market activity with the legal and regulatory certainty that comes from trading through a regulated CCP. They avoid the capital and operational costs of setting up separate digital-island infrastructure.

The move links primary issuance, cleared repo trading, wholesale settlement, custody, and collateral re-use in one end-to-end digital post-trade lifecycle. This preserves systemic stability and capital velocity while allowing adoption of new technology.

The decision to reduce support measures for STIR markets highlights that regulatory uncertainty remains a constraint on building European liquidity in short-term interest rate contracts, even as digital-asset clearing advances.

What to watch

  • ESM digital bond volumes in Eurex Repo GC Pooling
  • ECB GC Pooling basket composition updates
  • Clearstream Pontes wholesale CBDC settlement flows
  • Eurex STIR market volume trends after support cuts
